ELC Students Win Prestigious Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Awards

English Language Centre (ELC) is proud to announce that 180 out of 186 students who joined the competition have achieved exceptional success in the prestigious Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025.

12 students have been awarded the gold medal, 42 students earned a silver medal and 76 secured a bronze medal, showcasing the depth of literacy talent at ELC.  Another 50 students received a certificate of participation.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, run by The Royal Commonwealth Society, is the world’s oldest international schools’ writing contest.  It provides young people the opportunity to express their ideas on key global issues and develop their talent in writing.

This year’s theme “Our Commonwealth Journey” inspired students to explore the relevance of journeys in a Commonwealth context, allowing them to write about their individual journeys whether personal, historical or geographical.  A record of 53,434 entries from 56 Commonwealth countries were submitted.

Mdm Christina Lau, principal of ELC said: “We are absolutely thrilled and immensely proud of our students’ outstanding achievement.  This year, we are unable to publish all their names due to the large number of winners.  This testifies to their creativity and critical thinking. This success also reflects ELC’s commitment to fostering excellence in literacy and empowering students to put their thoughts into the written word.”

She praised the dedication of the teachers who supported the students throughout their writing process.  ELC is committed to carrying out the Sarawak government’s primary goal regarding English which is to ensure high proficiency among its people.

Located in Jalan Rock here, ELC is still handling enrollment for its 2026 classes.  For more information, call 082-250950 / 011-5557 2509.

READING CAMPAIGN

16 students, aged 8 to 16, at the English Language Centre, recently were awarded RM30 MPH gift vouchers each for completing at least ten outstanding book reviews. The reading campaign which started in January and ended on 7/7/23, encouraged students to cultivate the habit of reading. Mdm. Christina Lau, the principal said,’ We want our students to find joy in reading books of different genres to widen their knowledge and to improve their vocabulary and writing skills.’ Students at ELC look forward to going to the school library every week with their teachers. They fill in their own library forms with the book title, the author’s name and checked-out dates. Similar campaigns like this will be organised in the future and all students here are encouraged to participate and be awarded for their effort in writing book reviews.
